Why I Built an interactive Website Configurator(And Why It Makes Buying a Website Easier)

Learn how my interactive website configurator helps small businesses design, preview and receive an instant website estimate before their project begins.

If you've ever investigated getting a new website for your business, you'll probably recognise the process. You make an enquiry, you arrange a meeting, you spend an hour discussing ideas, a quote arrives a few days later. Then come the emails, revisions, more conversations and, quite often, a bit of uncertainty from both sides.

Having worked in business development for years before moving into web design, I started to notice something. The hardest part of building a website wasn't building the website, it was everything that happened beforehand.

The Problem Wasn't the Website

For most small business owners, a website is a significant investment, so naturally you want to get it right.

The problem is that many people know exactly how they want their business to be perceived, but they don't necessarily know how that translates into a finished website. As a web designer, I found myself asking questions like:

  • How many pages do you need?
  • What style are you looking for?
  • Do you want a gallery?
  • What kind of layout do you prefer?

The answer was often:

I'm not really sure

And that's completely fine. Most people don't buy websites every day. Expecting someone to visualise an entire website from a conversation isn't easy.

First Impressions Matter More Than Ever

Research consistently shows just how important good web design has become. Studies suggest that 94% of first impressions are related to a website's design, while around 75% of people judge a company's credibility based on its website.

Think about your own browsing habits. If you visit a website that looks outdated, loads slowly or is difficult to navigate, how long do you stay?

Probably not very long.

Your website is often the very first interaction a customer has with your business, long before they ever pick up the phone or walk through your door.

I Started Looking at the Process Differently

After launching Dan Henderson Web Design, I kept asking myself one simple question:

"Why are we asking people to imagine something when we could simply let them see it?"

When you buy a new car, you don't sit in a meeting describing what you think it might look like, you configure it. You choose the colour, you select the wheels, you add the extras, and you watch it take shape in front of you.

It felt like buying a website should work in much the same way.

Building the Website Configurator

That's where the idea came from. Instead of asking clients to explain what they wanted, I built an interactive website configurator that allows them to design the foundations of their website themselves. Visitors can choose a website style, select the pages they need, add features that suit their business, preview their choices live and receive an instant estimated price before making an enquiry.

Rather than replacing the web designer, it gives both of us a much clearer starting point.

By the time someone gets in touch, I already have a good understanding of what they're looking for, and they have a much better idea of what they're going to receive.

Better for Clients. Better for Me.

One thing I've learned throughout so far is that good design isn't just about making something look nice, It's about making things easier. The configurator removes a lot of the uncertainty from the early stages of a project. Clients can take their time, explore different options and see how their choices affect the overall website before committing to anything.

For me, it means less time trying to interpret vague descriptions and more time focusing on building a website that genuinely fits the business.

Everyone wins.

This Is Only the Beginning

The configurator you're seeing today is the first version. Like any product, it'll continue to evolve based on how people use it and the feedback they give me. Over time, I want it to become an even more intuitive way for businesses to design, price and eventually launch a professional website.

The goal has never been to remove the human element from web design, It's to remove the unnecessary friction.

Final thought

If you've got five minutes, I'd really appreciate you giving the configurator a try. Whether you're actively looking for a new website or you're simply curious, every click and every bit of feedback helps me improve it.

After all, the best products aren't built in isolation, they're shaped by the people who use them.
